Spindle Back Bench

Spindle Back Bench
Clean lines, simple bevels, and subtle textures create a piece that is meant to be used. All but the first rough cuts were done with hand tools. Each spindle began as a flat board and was slowly shaped by hand planes to a near cylindrical finish. Soft ridges and rounded corners were left to be felt, creating an intimate and engaging experience for the sitter. The design was done completely by pencil. Hours of careful planning, reading, and curious sitting were recorded in a notebook filled with rough dimensions and rudimentary sketches. Eventually these drawings were refined into working plans. The hand done drafting, while painstakingly slow, brought a knowledge and relationship with the bench only available through this intimate process.
