Kantan Chest
The inspiration for this project began with my baby nephew. I live far from him and cannot see him often. My brother and I highly value our heirlooms, so I decided to make my nephew a storage chest. It features a few details perfect for child use, like soft-close hinges, gaps for air flow, and it is sized to sit at the end of a twin bed. As he grows, it will remain a perfect furniture solution, able to act as storage, bench, and table.
To call attention to the traditional joinery techniques in the construction, the chest is made using contrasting wood species. Salvaged black walnut was found and repurposed, and locally milled hard maple was paired with it for color contrast with similar hardness levels.
